Cross-national analysis of attitudes towards fossil fuel subsidy removal

Abstract In 2021, governments of 51 countries spent US$697 billion on subsidizing fossil fuels. Removing fuel subsidies is crucial not only for reducing CO 2 emissions and making carbon pricing more effective, but also valuable use government funds. Currently, however, scientific evidence the scale scope public attitudes towards subsidy-removal policies lacking, yet it instrumental gauging political feasibility. Furthermore, previous studies tend to focus in developed world only. Here we present a comparative analysis both taxation subsidy removal, focusing five developing across four continents. It found that (1) removing undesirable than introducing (2) has more-positive removal if optimal saved fiscal revenues specified.
